Internship and Career Center Director Marcie Kirk Holland

What are your roles and responsibilities as Director of the Internship and Career Center (ICC)?

My roles and responsibilities as director of the Internship and Career Center (ICC) are to work with my colleagues to create services that help students find fulfilling careers and to make connections with employers to find those positions.

What does a normal day look like in your calendar?

My days are filled with a lot of meetings; I’m new in my position, and I feel it’s very important to hear from our constituencies. I have been meeting with deans, directors, and students to hear about how to best make our services meet the needs of our campus. I’m trying to listen a lot. I am also advocating. Along with the directors of the other UC career centers, met with Janet Napolitano to discuss how the UC System can best position our students and graduates for success. I look forward to some exciting initiatives.

How do you spend your free time during the weekends or after work?

In my new job, I don’t have much free time (laughs). I really like to run. I also like to meditate—both clear my head. I like being involved with my kids’ activities. They are bothinvolved in youth sports, and I spend a lot of time supporting them.

If you could be a super hero, who would you be, and why?

I’m thinking of Wonder Woman! I think Wonder Woman has that magical element to do all things so easily.

What advice would you give to student to succeed after college?

Be yourself. Be brave, and understand that this is one of the most critical times in your life. Live without regret, as you won’t get this time back.
